The STUDIO CELEBRATES ECHO PARK COMMUNITY PARADE
AND THE STUDIO WITHOUT WALLS
Los Angeles, CA – Thursday, December 8, 2011 – The Studio for Southern California proudly participates for the 4 year in the Echo Park Community Parade on Saturday, December 10th from 10AM – 1PM in Echo Park. Members of the Studio and public are encouraged to participate in the festivities and celebrate the Studio’s work in the community. We will be giving out bookmark/timelines, guides to LA history, and balloons to the Echo Park community. Details on the parade can be found at http://echoparkcommunityparade.com/.
“Each neighborhood in our community contributes to the overall history and culture of our great city,” said Sharon Sekhon, PhD, Executive Director of the Studio for Southern California History. “It’s important to the Studio and its connection to the area that we come support the community and make the general public aware of the work we’re doing to capture the personal histories of Angelenos.”
The day is particularly noteworthy for the Studio as it marks the transition from a storefront presence to a virtual presence. After the end of the year, the Studio will no longer maintain its gallery space on Hill Street. Instead, it will focus on its community-based events like walking tours, documenting histories and mapping various neighborhoods and weaving them all into the LA History Archive the crowning jewel of the Studio’s last five years at www.lahistoryarchive.org.
Visitors from around the world continually access the Archive and spend considerable time conducting research. They seek the lesser known histories of the people who defined what it means to be an Angeleno and contributed to the city.
“Our best efforts and most effective work is been done outside of the Gallery space,” stated Sekhon. “It became clear to us that if we were to thrive for another five years, we had to use our resources to focus on what we do best, and that work is in the community and online.”
At the Gallery on Hill Street, the evening on the 10th will be a celebration of the last five years and an opportunity for members and the public to pay tribute to the work done and the work to be done in the future.
Guests will experience
Mike the Poet Sonksen who will do a reading at 7:30
and hear from rocker Lysa Flores at 8:30. All are
welcome and donations of $15 are suggested.
The Studio wishes to thank its members and foundation supporters including Lauren Bon and the Metabolic Studio, the California Council for the Humanities, and the Candelaria Fund.
The Studio for Southern California History seeks to critically chronicle Southern California history from a social and cultural perspective. By examining history “from the bottom up” the Studio hopes to recover overlooked histories of community and strife in the larger Los Angeles area and to foster a sense of place and political entitlement among Southern Californians.
